Yes, when it is built for it. We install over a shock pad rated to a fall height so the surface meets ASTM impact standards for the equipment on it. Tell us the tallest play structure and we spec the pad to match. Plain turf over dirt does not pass, the pad is what does the work.
It is softer and more forgiving than concrete, decomposed granite, or worn wood chips, and there is nothing to scatter or hide sharp objects in. The blades are non-abrasive, and the infill we use for play areas is chosen to stay cooler and cleaner than crumb rubber.
Turf warms in direct summer sun like any surface. For play areas we use a lighter-colored infill and can spec cooling additives, but shade is the real answer, so we often pair installs with a sail or ramada. A quick rinse drops the temperature fast on the hottest days.
